Years at Star of the Sea:  1975-1976, 1992-Present

Star of the Sea has been home to me for many years.  I began teaching in 1973 as a middle school science teacher, but my recent tour of duty with Star began in 1992.  In between those times I have worked with middle school students on the mainland, taught at Star in the 70's, taught high school biology here in the Islands, and even worked for two years as a 5th grade math and science teacher.  From the moment I began teaching I knew I loved working with teenagers.  They truly have a thirst for knowledge, they have great senses of humor, and are really fun to be with.

My goal as a teacher, and our goal at Star of the Sea, is to prepare our students to do Science.  They perform many experiments, write lab reports and make conclusions.  Manipulating materials, measurement, data collection, and analysis are important skills we want our students to have when going into high school.  We are fortunate to have a well equipped classroom where we can work on all of these skills.

One part of our program is a trip to the Challenger Center each fall.  It is a NASA sponsored learning program, where students role play as working scientists on a space station.  It takes a great deal of preparation before hand and a great deal of problem solving on the trip.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of my job is working with a team of teachers who are dedicated and incredibly cooperative.  A true team spirit exists among my co-workers, which makes it possible for us to keep challenging ourselves and the students to be the best we can be.
