Mary, Star of the Sea school is blessed to have several students from around the world and those who are able to travel abroad. With this global resource at hand, an opportunity often arises where students are able to teach fellow students about other countries. Recently, 5th grader Malena Medan-Pass visited her relatives in Argentina. Upon returning, Malena taught students in her Math class about the different money in Argentina and the definition of exchange rate. She also showed the difference in prices between Starbucks or McDonald’s items in both countries. Malena’s influence went beyond Math and into Art as she co-taught a class with her art teacher, Mrs. Laura McGrath, where students learned about Argentina’s surreal artist, Xul Solar. Following the art presentation, students even enjoyed freshly baked Argentinian cookies, alfajo de maicena. Not only has Malena benefited from her trip to visit relatives in Argentina, but her entire class learned some valuable global lessons as well.
