Imagine third and fourth graders in lab jackets, goggles, and gloves extracting DNA from papaya slices. On October 20th, 2016, Mary, Star of the Sea students were able to go from imagination to reality as they participated in the popular “Gene-ius Day” program at the University of Hawaii. By using a procedure the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources utilized to help the food industry, students were learning the same procedure with a hands-on approach. They also were able to make simple models of DNA strands using straws and vinyl strips. It was exciting for our third and fourth grade students to be immersed in the surroundings and academia of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
