Intermediate Division

The Intermediate Division consists of grades fourth and fifth and is a stepping stone preparing students for the skills they will need to be successful for Middle School. Beginning in fourth grade, students transition between core subject teachers building their organization and independence. Students begin their morning with their homeroom teacher and then transition between classes for English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion. In addition to the core subjects, students receive instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education. One to one Chromebooks in the Intermediate Division provides students with innovative opportunities to learn, create and develop typing skills, while building their 21st century skills.

In Language Arts, students participate in quarterly novel studies, analyze the author’s craft, and study grammar through sentence diagramming. Students also build their writing skills through descriptive, persuasive, expository and narrative writing.

In Math, students reinforce their basic facts multiplication and division fact skills while practicing for speed and accuracy. Students deepen their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, decimals and whole numbers. 

In Social Studies, 4th grade focuses on geography, while learning about states and capitals by each region in the United States. In 5th grade, the focus is on U.S History and building higher level thinking, higher level questions, and teaching information to recall, while building comprehension skills. 

In Science, the focus is on place-based learning, while covering units in life science, earth science and physical science. Students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on experiments and actively go outside for observations and lessons.

In Religion, 4th grade students focus on the 10 Commandments and Saints, while the focus prayer is on Our Father. In 5th grade, students focus on the Sacraments and Beatitudes, with the focus prayer on the Apostles Creed. Learning is connected and made relevant to students’ lives and the world today, while attending Mass weekly and given the opportunity to lead Mass.
