Aloha Star of the Sea Families,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Star of the Sea School’s annual “May Day is Lei Day” springtime celebration! The Catholic Church dedicates the month of May to our Lady, Star of the Sea. Here in Hawai`i, the first of the month is also the most colorful day of the year, Lei Day. In 1927, the “May Day is Lei Day” tradition was introduced by songwriter and poet Don Blanding and soon became an official holiday.
Lei were worn by ancient Hawaiians to beautify themselves and distinguish themselves from others. Over time, the lei has become a symbol of love, appreciation, and respect. With the guidance of talented teachers, our students annually honor Hawaiian culture and monarchy through song and dance.
Me ka mahalo nui,
Mrs. Margaret Rufo
