Middle School

The Middle School Division consists of grades 6th to 8th and as students are approaching their adolescent years, they experience a growing sense of independence and responsibility. The curriculum at Mary, Star of the Sea supports this developmental stage by encouraging students to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills, while learning to analyze and synthesize. One to one Chromebooks in Middle School provides students with innovative opportunities to learn, create and develop typing skills, while building their 21st century skills.

In Middle School students deepen their knowledge and skills in all core subjects: Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion. In addition to the core subjects, students receive instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education. Students are also introduced to new subjects and more advanced concepts with the goal of preparing students for high school level courses. Students are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of electives, learn Spanish as a foreign language, attend advisory, study skills class and health education. Every other year students in 7th and 8th grade are also given the opportunity to take a trip to Washington D.C.

In Language Arts, students participate in novel studies, analyze the author’s craft using supportive evidence and build their writing skills through narrative, expository, argumentative and poetry. 

In Math, 6th grade students build upon what they have learned in 5th grade ​​while focusing on the following major math strands: number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, and spatial sense, measurement, and functions, and probability In 7th grade, students are introduced to pre-algebra in preparation for 8th grade where the focus is on Algebra and SSAT Prep.

In Social Studies, 6th grade focuses on Ancient Civilizations through the study of Ancient Cultures from across the globe. In 7th grade, the focus is on US History to the Civil War and finally in 8th Grade students continue with US History, while focusing on the Civil War to Today.

In Science, students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on experiences in the science lab, while learning how to write a lab report. In 6th grade students study Earth Science, in 7th grade students study Life Science and in 8th grade students study Physical Science.

In Religion, 6th grade students focus on bible stories and scriptures while making connections with Social Studies. In 7th grade the focus is on the story of Jesus, and in 8th grade the focus is the Story of Our Church (theology). Students are given a bible verse each week to memorize, with the goal by the end of the year they have learned 36 bible verses. Art and music are also integrated throughout religion class. Students also inquire into the life of saints and each unit focuses on a new saint. All students have a chance to participate in Mass, catholic or not.
